flexible, scalable, reversible, human
As the gateway to the city of Caen, the Clemenceau sector is a district undergoing profound change. Characterised today by a rather heterogeneous composition, it will undergo demolitions and remodelling in the pursuit of a genuine urban project led by the city. The general plan provides for a new form of density, new urban balances and the deployment of a more assertive street logic. The reconfigured Clos Joli site presents a stretched geometry and a built continuity: it is in this spirit that we have built our proposal.
Two collective buildings forming a curved, soothing urban angle. Facades punctuated with recesses and loggias creating variations while ensuring the privacy of users. A second set of terraced townhouses with simple volumes topped by diagonally pitched roofs giving a random aspect to the gables on the street.
These gaps created by this division of the block allow a smooth transition between the street and its heart, thus allowing a gradual transition from the public space to the more intimate one of the residence.
In the centre, linked to the halls, a “small square”, a planted garden, will be assigned the uses that the residents will define together, thus offering the possibility of creating places for meeting and sharing.
The dwellings are designed to be flexible and reversible in order to respond to changes in users and lifestyles. The construction system – steel frame and modular construction – allows great flexibility in the different functionalities of the buildings. Indeed, wood is not only used for the façade, but also for the partition walls. .
