a city entrance landmark
At the head of Villejean’s urban renewal area and located on one of the city of Rennes main entrances, the project reflects an architecture anchored in its time: clear, sober, orientated and linked. This area is marked by the sixties and high buildings do not really figure as innovation there, yet the new project stands out by an unusual mixed use program. Beyond the signal effect inherent to its highness, the architectural concern is the smooth integration of different functions, quartered between monumental aspect and privacy.
Considering its huge proportions (55 meters high for nearly 115 meters long) the ensemble becomes a metropolitan monument: from far it helps to the city understanding. Closely, it brings a new consistency to the public space, thanks to its integration qualities, animations and the transparencies of its base. At the scale of the city, the sculptural whiteness of the tower links the project to the key urban objects of Rennes. At the scale of the district, appears the coherence of the whole included in a common facade pattern for all parts of the program.
All the dwellings are facing both South and the historical city center. Their super-large window plays an essential role in the building purpose, maximizing sunlight and views on the urban panorama, featuring a large interior bench dedicated to contemplation.
